Malena Therese Marchetti

I added a new word to my vocabulary today: dermolipoma. That is what is going on in Malena's left eye. The doctor's book describes a dermolipoma as...

"A gelatinous mass located in the lateral canthus area. These masses are choristomas that contain fatty tissues with dermal appendages. Generally, no treatment is needed. Surgical excision is indicated only when the mass presents a significant cosmetic problem. Surgical removal can cause local scarring and limited ocular motility."

It seems kinda scary, but the doctor assured me that it is not serious and most likely the mass will not cause a problem as she grows. It is alarming, though, to see how big it is when you pull back her eyelid.

The opthamologist also dilated her pupils and informed me that, unfortunately, Malena inherited my vision...or lack of vision I should say. She has an astigmatism in each eye. Most likely she'll be wearing glasses in a few years.

On a lighter note, Malena started eating solid food! On Sunday, we started feeding her organic brown rice cereal (yuck!). Her daddy did the honors. Check out the photos in Month 6 and see what a mess she made.

I believe separation anxiety is starting to kick in. Every time I leave the room she whines like a baby. But, she is a baby, so I guess that's okay. ;-)

She is trying so hard to roll from back to tummy. It is funny to see her. She goes head first. She was able to do it yesterday, but she rolled off the ottoman and onto a pillow, so I'm not sure that counts!

T.J. took Malena to work yesterday morning, which was very exciting for her from what I hear. I was sick all Sunday night with food poisoning, so T.J. took her while I was at the doctor. Now I'm enjoying a cup of jello and catching up on Malena's "latest news." Hope you've enjoyed it.

Last night was wonderful. Malena slept entirely through the night! Granted, she is sick with a cold. But, it was so great to not have to get up. Of course, T.J. and I both woke up a couple times because we are just not used to sleeping 8 hours straight!

I'll probably be taking Malena to the doctor this week...not because of her cold...but because she has something weird happening to her left eye. On the outside corner, there is pale pink tissue growing. It looks the same as the tissue on the underside of the eyelid. Hopefully it is nothing to really be concerned about.

Malena is getting louder and louder. It is so funny! Last week we ate at Souplantation. It is one of those cheap salad and pasta bar restaurants. We go there every now and then because it is kid-friendly...and the soft-serve frozen yogurt allows us to blow our New Year's resolution gracefully. Anyway, I digress. Malena just started gabbing away. She was so loud it was borderline embarrassing! T.J. was supporting her as she stood on the table as if she was lecturing a crowd. It was so cute. I wish I'd had the video camera.

We've been having a good ole time lately. Malena loves going for strolls on a sunny day. She enjoys playing alone in her exersaucer and under her activity gym. But, lately she has been whining as soon as I leave the room. I hope separation anxiety isn't starting to kick in.

I assembed the high chair about a week ago. We'll be using it for the big event this weekend most likely...solid food! That's if you can call runny rice cereal solid food. I can't wait to see what she thinks of it. She has had mini "tastes" of adult food. I've let her lick a banana, a piece of white chocolate, and some vanilla yogurt. She wasn't too impressed with any of it. I can't imagine her reaction to bland rice cereal. That reminds me, I need to go charge up the camera batteries!

Malena and I have decided to ring in the New Year with the flu. Or some kind of bug. Not sure, but it's not fun! To top it off, T.J. nearly broke his thumb yesterday. He is sporting a fancy splint that piques Malena's interest.

We had a wonderful Christmas and New Year's in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with T.J.'s side of the family. She had so much fun playing with her 3 older GIRL cousins. It snowed for the first several days. Malena seemed to like it as she stared out of the windows. I can't wait for the day when she can play in it!

Santa Claus (and relatives) was generous this year. He must have heard that Malena was a good girl. (I guess he chose to forget the first 3 months of her life!) She got a highchair, car seat, 12-volume set of My Bookhouse books, a silver cup, spoons, butt paste, Mother Goose blocks, a doll, and a few other fun items.
