Mimi can now get up on her hands and knees. I found her in her crib doing this yesterday. She was rocking back and forth then lost her balance and fell down. First thing T.J. did when he got home was lower the crib mattress. Now I don't have to worry. So, I guess she'll be crawling soon. I dread that!!!

The good news is that now she doesn't insist on sleeping in her "spot," which was in the corner of the bumper with her face stuffed in it. She sleeps all over the crib, sometimes on her belly. This will make it much easier for me when I go to Kentucky and Ohio with her in a couple weeks. Lord knows it was hell when she slept in the Pack 'N Play a few weeks ago in Palm Springs. She lifted up her legs and slammed them down all night long!

Malena is finally making sounds besides just "aaaaahhhhh." She's added "bwah" and "da." When she is frustrated she strains her little body by constricting every muscle and straightening her arms down and saying "mmmmmmmmmmmmm!" Still not much else besides the high-pitched shrieking.

I finally gave her her Valentine's present. Yes, a little late, but T.J. wondered why I was even giving a baby a Valentine's present in the first place. It is called the Discover Sounds Kitchen, and it's quite cute. I'll post photos of her playing with it soon.

I am lucky that she is a great eater. She will eat everything you offer her. I've tasted all of her baby food, and some of it is just plain nasty, especially the chicken with wild rice. But she eats it with no complaints. She can even feed herself finger foods, such as those fruit puff thingies. Cheerios soon to come.

Friday night was my first night alone with the baby. It wasn't really a big deal, other than that it was the first time. As I was putting Malena to sleep, it made me think about what it must be like to be T.J. This is a tough thought to put into words. He is the one who takes care of us, ultimately. He works, gets paid, pays for our food and house. T.J. is the one who makes us feel safe. Before I was married, I did all of those things, but the only person depending on me was ME. I can't really describe what I was feeling. I just felt like a different person as I was getting myself ready for bed. Setting the alarm and double-checking all the locks. Looking for the boogie man in the closets. It is a very uneasy feeling knowing that there is no one to look after you. All I can say is that I am truly grateful for my husband! I don't know how single parents do it. I don't miss my single days one bit.
    -------------------------------------------------
Malena becomes more and more fascinating every day. If you aren't a parent yet, this will just bore you for sure.

Yesterday as she sat on my lap facing me, she was extremely observant. I was wearing a long sleeve button down shirt. She was intrigued by a button on my chest. She kept staring at it and exploring it with her little hands. Then she tried eating it, and as she got closer, she noticed a freckle on my chest. That captivated her for another few minutes. She then took notice of the fact that my sleeves were haphazardly pulled up on my forearms. She kept looking back from arm to arm, noticing the symmetry of the situation.

The opposability (is that a word?) of her thumbs is another recent fascination. She loves to stare at her hand, moving just the thumb at first, then flicking it against the tips of her other fingers. There is something quite graceful about the way she does this so slowly and deliberately. I think she will be like her Daddy, who is great with his hands. (Don't take that the wrong way! He has this strange ability to very quickly catch falling objects. I've only seen him miss once.)

A few mornings ago, I lifted her out of her crib and she just kept staring down at my legs. I'd just awakened as well, so I was in boxer shorts. I realized that she has rarely seen my bare legs and feet. So I sat down and let her play with my legs for a while. She laughed when I moved my feet and toes. Now every time I try to feed her a bottle, she gets frustrated until she can see my feet.

Sadly, smiles are hard to come by these days. She is cranky a lot because she has more teeth coming. Taking photos of her is a real challenge as she just doesn't want to smile!

This week was quite fun! Malena and I tested out indoor play gyms. On Wednesday we went to Gymboree Play & Music. It was cute. We sang songs and played with puppets. It got a little weird when all the mommies then had to give their babies massages with safflower oil...but not before asking their permission. "Malena, may I please massage you?" What the hell!

So today I decided to try My Gym, which also happens to be much closer to our house. We also sang songs there. But, the activities were more fun. It seemed more educational and better for their physical development. It was great, so we signed up. We'll be going once or twice a week for as long as Malena enjoys it.

She was by far the most "vocal" one of the bunch. Unfortunately, I think she's inherited the Bergeron Big Mouth. It was very funny, though, watching her scream with delight at the other babies and adults. Priceless, really. I put up some photos of her playing at My Gym in the Month 7 album.
